Skinvive vs. Filler: What’s the Difference?
Skinvive is made from hyaluronic acid, but it’s not your average dermal filler.
Skinvive is now available at all Skin Pharm clinics! It may have a similar composition to hyaluronic acid fillers, but this skin-boosting treatment doesn’t add volume. What are the benefits of filler?
Dermal fillers can be used in a few ways and offer several different benefits. At Skin Pharm, we use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. These can help replace lost volume, add support where needed and enhance your natural features. As we age, we lose bone mass, collagen and elastin, which leads to more skin laxity and textural changes. Fillers are a great way to rebuild that support. They also have moisture-retaining properties that plump skin, help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin quality for a more youthful appearance.
What are the benefits of Skinvive?
Similarly to dermal fillers, Skinvive is made from a modified hyaluronic acid — but instead of changing the shape of the face or adding volume, it improves the appearance of skin. This skin-boosting treatment hydrates, smooths skin texture and gives you an overall glow.
Are the two injected differently?
Yes! Filler can be injected multiple ways. When treating the cheeks, chin and jawline, we inject typical HA fillers deeper into the skin to help build support. We can also use a cannula to distribute filler throughout the area being treated.
On the other hand, Skinvive is injected very superficially into the dermis of the skin using a microdroplet technique. This is different from typical filler because the goal isn’t to add volume. To hydrate skin and give it a glow, we want to place Skinvive closer to the skin’s surface.
Both sound great! Should I get filler or Skinvive?
Any patient who wants to increase hydration, smooth skin and get an overall glow is a good candidate for Skinvive. These microdroplet injections help improve the quality of the skin instead of changing the shape of the face.
If you want volume to help enhance your features or create a more symmetrical face shape, filler’s what you’re looking for. You’ll get the benefit of reducing fine lines and wrinkles, too!

What’s the downtime like for each treatment?
Depending on the patient, type of filler and amount of filler injected, recovery and downtime can vary — but it’s pretty minimal for both filler and Skinvive.
Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects with filler, so that’s something to consider when thinking about social downtime. We recommend avoiding any strenuous activity for 24 hours, but you can return to normal activities the day after your injections!
How long does it take to see results, and how long do they last?
With filler, results are immediate and last anywhere from 6-12 months — sometimes even longer! With Skinvive, you might notice an improvement in fine lines shortly after treatment, but results will be fully visible after about 30 days and last for up to six months.
